Olympic Collectible Expo 2022

I only have one excuse for not posting more photos, but I had to drive three hours, mostly in the dark, to get to this little Kitsap Mall pop-up Saturday convention, November 5, 2022. Wait - that's Guy Fawkes Night. Maybe we can do a theme next year. Go get your table at OCE on Facebook.

But I DO use Ka-Blam.com for print-on-demand singles comics (floppies), for nearly '80's prices. And I always show their tshirt at convention, and each time get $10 print credit. It works - I've printed enough book for shows, and am still in the black! So here's my Ka-Blam shirt at the Olympic Collectibles Expo. The guy who took the photo is Steven Valentine, of Comic Rat. Hook up with him and his great art at ComicRat, Instagram.

OCE has comics, publishers, gamers, jewelers, and even a couple of cosplayers - and definitely needs more cosplayers! I had fun saying "Welcome to the comicon!" to surprised mall wanderers. The conversation usually went like this:

"Welcome to the Comicon!"

Startled look. "I've never been to a comicon."

"You have now."

I'll probably podcast more about the convention itself, and the nasty drive home, including getting stuck at the Hood Canal bridge.

I promise more photos next time.

New Ka-Blam Tshirt

My old white Ka-Blam tshirt was too big - and just not cool. But what's better than black? So thank you, Ka-Blam, my fave floppy printer, for quality and price. And a hot new tshirt.

Recent and Upcoming Conventions

Needed to catch up on my posting! Here's me in a Ka-Blam tshirt at Shortrun last year.

And then me in my Ka-Blam tshirt at Emerald City.

Ka-Blam is the best place for old-style floppy comics, reprinted print-on-demand. The prices are almost the same as they were when we first printed those books, and the quality is superb. Paper is very white, and the inks are very black. Colors are great, too!

Mexico!
Pacific Northwest/Egyptian!
Now here are the table covers I'm going to be using at the Amazing Hawaii Comicon: done by hand with markers. They go both ways, so I can use one or the other depending on which end of the table I'm sharing.

One of them is done in with Mexican styles in mind, the other with a mix of Northwest native and Egyptian. I think I'll use the Mexican one for Hawaii.

Photos could be better, but you'll see them at shows.

Emerald City 2015 - Bestest Friends

Proof I was at ECCC 2015
In my Ka-Blam shirt, again. Told other artists at Emerald City Comicon about the $10 print deal for wearing and promoting the shirt. They liked.

Wow, what a show. Four days next year? Madness! But in a good way.

Had an infection that ALMOST canceled the show for me, but the right antibiotics for the strain of nasty I'd contracted finally put me on my feet for the 4 hour drive and the load-in. I don't count the ferry ride from Bainbridge Island - it's too relaxing. It's just the Road Trip.

So wasn't quite together a lot of the time. Those of you who saw me bouncing off the walls in Con Mode were watching the last sizzles at the bottom of the battery before I crawled back to my table - and at one point, under it.

But I got to meet a lot of old friends and make new ones. Roberta Gregory was sharing the table with me, with her new "True Cat Toons." Bruce Taylor shared her half of the table as author AND booth babe, so we weren't so locked down. He was really in sales mode, and moved some books. Then again, he always is.

Didn't make a lot of sales - but that's not really what the shows are for any more, are they? Especially now, with the internet. And I was concentrating on promoting the Clallam Bay Comicon (CBCC). MIGHT we be honored with the presence of Linda Medley, author of "Castle Waiting"? We have Roberta Gregory ("Naughty Bits," and many others), of course, who is always a splendid addition to any show.

My "How To Draw A Horse Correctly" panel went well. I was a bit confused by the new overhead technology, and kept sliding out of the screen - tape the pad of paper in place next time! - and trying to remember how the old panel went.

The original was called, "How To Draw A Horse Right, Damnit!" but ECCC Familied it up.

I'm planning on holding it again at the CBCC, and if all goes well, it will be filmed and loaded onto Youtube, so you can all watch it.

At the end, those who stayed - most of 'em, I think - came crowding up to remind me I'd promised to pass out the sketches. And I gave them the "passes" to the CBCC - you know, the one with no admission fees - and wished I'd remembered my comics for the panel.

One young man said, "This is the best thing I've been to all weekend!" which surprised and pleased me. A woman showed me her sketchbook, and it looked like she'd been xeroxing my sketches from the air! Not to give away the farm, but expect a comic book about Rome.... with the horses drawn correctly.

I should point out that my riding chops are nothing to write home about, so thanks to audience members who ACTUALLY know how to ride. As a kid, I just jumped on whatever woods colt was going and went off through the woods, while the pony's owner looked out the back window and said, "Huh. No horse. Must be off with the kids in the woods again." Rope bridles and hanging onto a mane are no substitute for the Vienna Riding school.

I had SOOOOO much fun being able to yack with Michael McAdam (old friend and former Peach Pitt) at ECCC 2015. However, I apologize for making the man go red as a balloon in his face and almost choking to death laughing. He said, " 'I'm bored" should be on my tombstone, and I said, "No, I want the line from Desert Peach #3: "The slut used duct tape."

New fabulous smart friend Meghan (booth babe and sound design) for the people by our table said the most dangerous words in the world are "I'm bored." Because I'd said, "I got bored and learned to crochet," while pointing out my new beret.

Damn' infection. I'm making all kinds of health changes THIS year, to keep me moving for upcoming years. The girl is 63 this year, but I'm not quitting. Not yet. Us artists and writers die at the drawing board and the keyboard, you know. When we're not out clearing potato sprouts out of the kale beds or catching the chickens trying to scam us.

Next year: Emerald City made purring noises about my presenting the horse panel again - and possibly, "How To Hold Your Own Comicon." Cross your fingers.

Emerald City 2014

Ka-Blam adds the right touch, as usual.
Another great Emerald City Comicon. And, as usual, wore my Ka-Blam Tshirt, to show off who printed my lovely reprints of Stinz and the Desert Peach!

Does it get any better?

Didn't post a lot of photos of Emerald City, because they're all over the interwebs!

2012 Clallam Bay Comicon Ka-Blam!

Yes, I wore my Ka-Blam tshirt to the Clallam Bay Comicon. So I get $10.00 for printing for Indyplanet books!

Emerald City Comicon 2012

Emerald City Comicon was great fun.

That's me with the long hair, the one in the back, in the Prism Comics Booth.  One on the left is my new friend Kyra, one on the right is the amazing Zan, Master of Prism.

Made many new friends, sold lotsa books, got to use the new Square card reader on my Ipad -- whoo whoo, real credit card capability without stupid accounts and stuff!

This here is my in the Ka-Blam t-shirt, worn at Emerald City to show off the new reprints.

In my next post, I'll finally get down and tell you all about Nerd Parties, and how I sold three of them and found a minion -- and a commissar.

Next week is Norwescon, then back to the Wet End, for the Clallam Bay Comicon and Photosynthesis 5!

Emerald City Comicon and Price and Prism

First of all, our cat Price is in hospital and stable, so that was a load off my mind.  He's eating and drinking, hopefully he'll start healing soon.

(Left) Me wearing my Ka-Blam shirt and showing the print-on-demand reprints of Bosom Enemies.  I ended up settling all the very nice proof copies on Prism Comics, to go to Chicago with them.  A few of those are a bit odd -- as in: One Of A Kind.

Prism will be my show reps from now on -- and if I'm at a show I'll be in their booth.  They're looking for women comics authors because their customers are demanding books from women.  And, as Zan Christensen of Prism says, "The booth looks a little strange with just men."

Met my oldest younger brother and Irish Twin, Don Colbert, for the first time in 30 years at the convention, and an old friend, Chris Clark.  (Me, Chris, Bud).

Cartoonist's Northwest's Scot Allan as the scary horror host clown, and my Stinz painting, available for sale.

Scot always had this insane English laugh, and when he's in this outfit, he's downright creepy.

The show was great -- I would have needed to be cloned to stop and talk as much as I wanted to with everybody, especially all the new and old friends and colleagues.
